With the recent deaths of Jade Goody and Patrick Swayze, cancer has never been so prevalent in our society and many seemed to be frightened by the fact that it could happen to anyone. But fashion is fighting back and is planning to kick cancer in the face. Breakthrough Breast Cancer is teaming up with Topshop, Olivia Rubin, Warehouse and many other high street stores in order to raise money for Fashion Targets Breast Cancer which is the ‘flagship fashion campaign dedicated to the prevention, treatment and ultimate eradication of breast cancer.’ So far, the campaign has raised over £10.5 million for Breakthrough, so we figured it was a pretty worthwhile campaign, especially after speaking to Vicki.
Vicki is a pretty normal 30 year old young lady. She is a River Island manager and would usually go out drinking with her friends and just have some fun like any other young woman. Except for the past five years, Vicki has been living with breast cancer. It’s shocking, and a little scary, to think that this woman is having to go through chemotherapy at the age of 30! But it does happen, Jade Goody was only 27, and this is exactly what Breakthrough Breast Cancer and Fashion Targets Breast Cancer are fight for.
So, we’ve picked out our favourite pieces from the campaign, take a look see!
Although breast cancer can be completely devastating and a great tragedy, there is always a ray of hope which Breakthrough Breast Cancer is working so tirelessly for. But don’t feel sorry for Vicki, she plans to have a very full and a very long life. In fact, she is planning to get married in six months and has also frozen four embryos so having children will not be a problem in the future.
‘Check your breasts regularly,’ Vicki warns ‘Breast cancer is not a death sentence, you have to stay positive. And don’t listen to the doctor when he tells you there is nothing to worry about, especially if you feel something is wrong. Be safe.’ As women, it’s a pretty important message!
